(yesterday he seemed to have discovered his tongue for the first time and spent all day sticking it out and feeling it with his fingers.  ‘Yep, still there’)

Powell Street Festival

August 4, 2008 by mitsumame

The Powell Street Festival is an annual Japanese style festival (matsuri) that I’ve been going to since I was wee.

Gabe was still a little young for it, even though he thinks he is old enough to go stomping around the festivities on his own. He is actually trying to peel Dada’s hand off his own here

Here is the omikoshi, or portable shrine that will be carried around the festival (we were leaving just as they were starting to carry it out).

Another traditional Japanese summertime game is the suika wari. Think pinata, but with a watermelon. I briefly considered letting the boy have a go, but quickly realized that toddler + big stick = concussed victims + lawsuits

Matsuri are thirsty business

Playing with his water balloon. They bill these things as ‘Japanese yo-yo’s because they have a length of elastic band attached to the end. They float them in a wading pool and let kids ‘fish’ for them with a rod and hook.

Unfortunately he yo-yo’d it right off the deck when we got home, and it was lost forever in the bushes on the side of the house.

(ok, this picture did happen after the loss of the balloon, but he was actually having a fit because I wouldn’t let him throw his socks off the deck too)

Randomly, another night of gaming with Dada in his new pwn4ge hat

And finally, a smile

Rainy Day

July 29, 2008 by mitsumame

I think we have to go shopping for little rain boots and a little rain slicker so we can go stomp in puddles properly.

We had to make do with a lot of trains and blocks today.

I’m not sure what this face is about, but it brings Disapproving Rabbits to mind.
